If you’ve spent any time around baseball recently, you’ve probably heard someone talking about exit velocity.

Coaches talk about it.

Recruiters track it.

Scouts pay attention to it.

And athletes are constantly trying to improve it.

You can’t watch an MLB game without them talking about it.

But what exactly is exit velocity, and why has it become one of the most important metrics in baseball?

Let’s break it down.

What Is Exit Velocity?

Exit velocity is simply the speed of the baseball immediately after it leaves the bat.

It’s measured in miles per hour (mph) and tells us how hard the ball was hit.

The harder a ball is hit, the less time defenders have to react and the farther the ball is likely to travel.

In simple terms:

Higher exit velocity usually leads to better offensive outcomes.

That’s why coaches and scouts pay so much attention to it.

Why Exit Velocity Matters

Not every hard-hit ball becomes a hit.

Not every weakly hit ball becomes an out.

Baseball will always involve a little luck.

What makes exit velocity valuable is that it measures something the hitter can control: the quality of contact.

Unlike batting average, which can fluctuate because of defense, weather, or luck, exit velocity gives a more objective look at a player’s power potential.

A hitter consistently producing high exit velocities is usually doing something right.

Remember: age, body weight, strength, mechanics, and experience all play a role in these numbers.

The Physics Behind Exit Velocity

One reason exit velocity gets so much attention is because small improvements can create big results.

As a general rule, every additional mile per hour of exit velocity can add several feet of distance to a batted ball.

That means a hitter who increases their average exit velocity by just 5 mph may see dramatically different results over time.

A few extra feet can be the difference between:

  • A flyout and a home run
  • A routine ground ball and a base hit
  • A warning-track fly ball and extra bases

Small gains matter.

What Influences Exit Velocity?

Exit velocity isn’t determined by one thing.

It’s the result of several factors working together:

Bat Speed

The faster the bat moves through the zone, the greater the potential exit velocity.

Quality of Contact

Barreling the baseball consistently will almost always produce higher exit velocities than hitting the ball off the end of the bat or near the handle.

Strength and Power

Rotational power, lower-body strength, and overall athleticism all contribute.

Swing Mechanics

Efficient sequencing and proper movement patterns help transfer energy into the baseball.

Pitch Speed

A 90 mph fastball can often produce higher exit velocities than a slower pitch because the incoming energy contributes to the collision.

How to Increase Your Exit Velocity

The good news is that exit velocity can be trained.

Improve Bat Speed

For most athletes, increasing bat speed is the biggest opportunity for growth.

Focus on:

  • Rotational power
  • Explosive movements
  • Efficient swing mechanics

Build Strength

Strong athletes generally hit the ball harder.

Prioritize:

  • Lower-body strength
  • Core development
  • Posterior chain training
  • Grip strength

Focus on Quality Contact

The sweet spot exists for a reason.

Consistently finding the barrel will improve both your exit velocity and your overall offensive production.

Get Meaningful Reps

Tee work, front toss, batting practice, and game at-bats all serve a purpose.

Quality repetitions over time create measurable improvement.

Exit Velocity Isn’t Everything

This is where many athletes get confused.

Exit velocity is important.

It is not everything.

A 100 mph ground ball directly at an infielder is still an out.

A hitter who produces high exit velocities but struggles to make contact consistently may not be as valuable as a hitter with slightly lower power and a more complete offensive approach.

Other factors matter too:

  • Launch angle
  • Barrel rate
  • Contact percentage
  • Plate discipline
  • Approach
  • Situational hitting

The best hitters combine power with consistency.

While exit velocity tells you how hard the ball was struck, launch angle determines the path the ball takes after leaving the bat.

According to MLB Statcast data, batted balls generally fall into four distinct categories based on their trajectory:

  • Ground Balls (Less than 10°): These hits stay low to the ground. Because they are easily fielded by infielders, they result in a low league-wide batting average (around .240) and almost never yield extra-base hits.
  • Line Drives (10° to 25°): This is the most consistently productive type of contact. Line drives combine strong carry with a low, piercing trajectory that easily clears the infield but lands before outfielders can react, resulting in a phenomenal league-wide batting average above .600.
  • Fly Balls (25° to 50°): This is the high-risk, high-reward zone. When paired with high exit velocity, fly balls give hitters the opportunity for extra-base hits and home runs. However, if struck weakly, these same angles result in routine flyouts.
  • Pop-ups (Greater than 50°): Once the angle exceeds 50 degrees, the ball travels incredibly high with very little forward distance. This gives the defense ample time to get into position, making it an automatic out with a batting average under .050.

Understanding these launch angle ranges helps hitters evaluate not just how hard they are hitting the ball, but whether they are producing the type of contact most likely to lead to success.

What Coaches and Recruiters Look For

Exit velocity has become one of the easiest ways for coaches to evaluate raw power potential.

A high school athlete consistently producing 90+ mph exit velocities is going to attract attention.

But coaches don’t recruit metrics alone.

They recruit athletes.

They look at:

  • Performance
  • Athleticism
  • Work ethic
  • Coachability
  • Character
  • Potential for future development

The number opens the door.

The athlete walks through it.

Final Thoughts

Exit velocity is one of the most valuable metrics a hitter can track.

It provides objective feedback, helps measure progress, and gives athletes a better understanding of their offensive potential.

But remember:

The goal isn’t simply to hit the ball harder.

The goal is to become a better hitter.

Use exit velocity as a tool. Track your progress. Celebrate improvement.
