Why I Started Athlete Den
Welcome to the Athlete Den blog.
This is where we’ll share recruiting insights, player development tips, industry news, and lessons we’ve learned along the way.
But before we dive into any of that, I wanted to share the story behind Athlete Den and why this company exists in the first place.
Growing Up in the Game
Like many athletes, sports were a huge part of my life growing up.
As the youngest of five children and the son of a former Major League catcher, I spent countless hours on fields, in rinks, and around competition.
Baseball and hockey were my passions, and for a long time, I assumed talent and hard work would be enough.
Then reality hit.
As I got older, the competition got better.
Players caught up. Roster spots became harder to earn.
I split playing time during my early high school years, and as a junior, I was cut from the baseball team entirely.
At the time, it was the worst feeling ever.
But it also became one of the most important moments of my athletic career.

Fighting Back
I went back to work. I trained relentlessly.
I focused on improving every aspect of my game and eventually earned my way back onto the team as a pitcher.
After high school, I decided to put all of my energy into baseball and pursue the game as far as it would take me.
The challenge was getting noticed.
No college programs were calling. No recruiters were knocking on my door.
So I did what many athletes do: I looked for opportunities wherever I could find them.
I attended showcases, camps, and recruiting events.
I was fortunate enough to have parents who supported those efforts, but even then, exposure was limited.
A few events, a few conversations, and a few opportunities were expected to determine the future of an athlete’s career.
A Decision That Changed Everything
Eventually, I landed at a school in New England.
That decision changed my life.
I earned significant playing time as a freshman, started throughout my college career, and served as a three-year captain.
I completed both my undergraduate and master’s degrees, and had the opportunity to compete in one of the top summer leagues in New England.
What I learned was simple:
Athletes develop at different speeds.
The player you see at 16 isn’t necessarily the player you’ll see at 20.
I was living proof of that.

The Moment That Sparked the Idea
As my playing career neared its end, I found myself back in a familiar position.
Once again, I was searching for opportunities and trying to get in front of the people making decisions.
Once again, the process depended heavily on showcases, travel, and access.
I remember traveling across the country for an event that was supposed to provide valuable exposure.
After spending thousands of dollars on travel, lodging, and event fees, rain reduced the showcase to a few swings and limited evaluations in an indoor facility.
It wasn’t anyone’s fault. That’s just how the system worked.
But it made me realize something.
Too much opportunity depended on factors athletes couldn’t control.
- Where they lived.
- How much money they could spend.
- Who they knew.
- How many events they could attend.
I started asking myself a simple question:
What if athletes could showcase their abilities without needing expensive equipment, constant travel, or access to elite facilities?
The Idea That Became Athlete Den
Years later, while building my career outside of sports, that question kept coming back to me.
One morning, during a workout, the idea finally clicked.
What if athletes could use the device they already carry every day — their phone — to capture meaningful performance data?
What if they could better understand their game, track their development, and share their progress more easily?
That idea became Athlete Den.
Today, we’re building tools that help athletes capture performance metrics quickly and simply using their phone.
Our goal is to make performance data more accessible and help athletes better understand where they are and where they’re going.
But this isn’t really about technology.
It’s about opportunity.
Why This Matters
I don’t regret a single part of my journey.
Every setback, every challenge, every unexpected turn helped shape who I am today.
But I do believe there are talented athletes everywhere who deserve a better chance to show what they’re capable of.
If Athlete Den can help even one athlete gain confidence, better understand their performance, or create an opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t have existed, then we’re moving in the right direction.
